Fatal accident remains under investigation

A Washington man was reportedly killed in an accident on Highway 218 in which the vehicle he was driving left the roadway and was submerged upside down in a creek.

According to the Iowa State Patrol at about 9:30 a.m. a 2008 Pontiac Montana driven by Jerry Lee Coblentz, 77, of Washington, was traveling southbound on Highway 218 at mile post 74, lost control, and drove into the west ditch, coming to rest on its top in the waterway.

The Washington County Communications Center reported one subject was out of the vehicle and one was still inside. Mandy Ann Shetler, 75, of Kalona, was reportedly a passenger in the vehicle. Washington County Sheriff’s deputies, Ainsworth QRS, Ainsworth Fire, Washington County Rescue, Riverside Fire and Rescue, Riverside QRS, Washington County Ambulance, Johnson County Ambulance, the Iowa State Patrol, the Iowa Department of Transportation, and Earl’s Towing all responded. Both subjects were transported by ambulance to the Washington County Hospital and Clinics, where Coblentz was pronounced deceased.

The accident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
