FAIRFIELD – Evan Horak accomplished one of his stated goals Thursday.

The Washington High School junior finished 13th in one of five Class 3A state qualifying meets for cross-country. The top 15 individuals and top three teams advance to the state meet at Kennedy Park outside Fort Dodge Oct. 27.

Washington finished 10th as a team. Horak finished in 17 minutes, 15 seconds to advance. Other Demons were Lance Sobaski in 28th at 18:08, Ben Loy in 57th with a time of 19:20, Matt Collett at 70 in 20:07 and in 73rd was Quinn Wubbena at 20:16.

Mt. Pleasant’s Cody Mertens won the race in 16:10.

Mary Blanchard of Grinnell won in 19:17.

Kelsey Pacha was the highest Demon in the girls race, finishing 36th in 21:58. Molly Sparks was 43rd in 22:31. Claire Horak was 51st in 22:56. Bailey Bryant took 53rd in 22:57 and Abby Voss was 60th in 23:18. Washington was eighth as a team.
