Being the only upperclassman on a team puts one in a leadership role.

Keota’s Jill Schulte is that leader.

Schulte had the Eagles’ only hit Monday in a 15-0 three-inning loss to South Iowa Cedar league foe Belle Plaine.

“Jill is an important piece for us,” Keota coach Dewey Purkeypile said. “Jill does an excellent job.”

Purkeypile is in his first year as the Eagles’ head coach.

“I rely on her a lot,” the coach said. “I often have questions for her and she will give me her honest opinion. She has more experience at this level than I do.”

The coach said Schulte knows what is expected of her.

“She is a natural leader,” he said. “It is huge to have someone like her in my corner.”

The Eagles went through two pitchers Monday in eighth-grader Macie McDonald and sophomore Alexia Purkeypile.

“Macie was doing a good job, they were just hitting her and I wanted to get Alexia in because we needed to get her some action and some experience,” the coach said.

McDonald had two strikeouts.

Keota is 0-12 and plays at English Valleys Wednesday.
