FAIRFIELD -- Washington High School won a Southeast Conference wrestling match on the road Thursday.

The Demons defeated Fairfield 54-30.

Washington’s second-ranked Tristin Westphal-Edwards wasted little time in winning his match, recording a pin in 1 minute, 7 seconds, which is the same amount of time Ayden Fraier used to win by fall at 160 pounds. Logan Esher took just 21 seconds for his winning pin. Walker Ikerd kept the theme going with a win 24 seconds and Cade Pohren won in just 49 seconds. Garrett Ikerd pinned his guy in 1:14 and David Hora won in 1:23. Dillan Sanders followed suit but he didn’t get his pin until the second round.

Washington also lost three matches by fall.

“I didn’t like giving up three pins,” Washington coach Brent Van Weelden said. “I thought at heavyweight, 113 and 120, we’d compete a little better there, but overall we wrestled pretty tough. We gave up a couple forfeits as they did. Fairfield is a pretty young team and I think they will grow and get better as the season progresses. We just need to get better at a couple of weights and we need to get healthy. We sat a couple of guys that could make a difference in the future. It’s good to get the first conference win and we’ll look to continue.”

The Demons have some goals in mind for the future.

“We’d like to win conference again,” Van Weelden said. “I don’t know if we’re the front-runner, it’s probably us, Mt. Pleasant and Fort Madison and it’s a matter of who’s going to shake out between all of those. Keokuk has some opens and obviously we won tonight, but it’ll be a battle down the stretch. We need to fill some holes and we can’t give up pins that we should win. If we do that, we’re not going to win conference.”
